Barcroft Garden

RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION

Barcroft

The difficult task of adding to a pristine 1927 bungalow in Arlington, Virginia led to a creative solution. Instead of appending a two-story addition directly to the back of the existing 1 1/2 story bungalow, thereby destroying the scale of the small house, the existing ridgeline was extended to the back and a taller “pavilion” was added, hidden from the street by carefully calculated sightlines.

This allows the original massing of the bungalow to remain visually intact, while allowing the new space to be larger, with high ceilings and extensive glazing facing the garden at the back of the house.

The screen porch acts as a transition from the garden into the house, and the new entry and laundry room provide much-needed modern conveniences while maintaining the original character of the building. Careful crafting of many details, including the rafters, porch rails, balcony, and window trim enhances the integration of the old and the new.
